What Impacts an Online Reputation?

Most people can think of a company who has suffered from a PR nightmare. They typically lead to consumers choosing a competitor. The company’s brand is stained as they are thought to be untrustworthy or unethical. There are a few things that could lead to this negative reputation.

Bad SEO Techniques

If you are a relatively new entrepreneur, overly critical voices can be pretty damaging. If a disgruntled employee or even old flames write a negative article about your company, it could forever determine the connotations with your company. But there are ways to effectively silence these smear campaigns. Perhaps the best one is a proper use of SEO schemes.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) relates to your ranking on websites like Google. Many entrepreneurs control it by adding a blog to their website. When somebody searches for your name or company, your content will fill the first few pages. The smear campaign will be buried in the latter pages of Google.

However, your writing will go to waste if you do not properly use keywords. Keywords are phrases you anticipate people to write into Google. When Google’s algorithms detect them on your website, they will show your article in the search results. SEO is a pretty powerful way of controlling your reputation.

Not Reaching Other Bloggers

Somebody who already has a pretty good reputation can actually share it with you. Research some of the most powerful influencers in your industry and link to their articles. They might appreciate that and provide a link back. Also, you should email them and ask if they would let you write a guest post. They usually will, because it is a win-win situation. When enough influencers give you a seal of approval, that will contribute to public perception and deflect any attempts to smear your business.

Not Monitoring Your Reputation

Many people use social media outlets as review websites. You need to know what people are saying. There are actually several tools that can help you monitor that. A related aspect of online reputation management is surveying what people are saying about your competitors. If a rival has developed a negative reputation, you should advertise that area as one of your strengths.

Failing to Rectify Negative Reviews

Some new entrepreneurs think all negative reviews need to be buried. But that is not necessarily the case. Negative reviews can be very useful. If there is a consistent theme, they are probably alerting you to something you need to change. Beyond that, you should really respond to negative reviews even if you do not agree with them. That will show the customer that you are making an effort to rectify the situation.

Being Too Corporate

Consumers want to know that entrepreneurs share their values. Let them see the human side of you. Post some non-controversial causes on your social media account.

Your brand is definitional. You should invest time and resources into protecting it from smear campaigns.  Your reputation is on the bottom line.
